"Scholarly, eloquent, persuasive and entertaining" (The Economist)
"Scholarly and entertaining...brings its extraordinary subject back to life. All amateurs of the marvellous age in which De Quincey lived will relish it." Michael Ratcliffe, The Times [London]
The Opium Eater is the highly readable account of the life of Thomas De Quincey (1785-1859), a key Romantic author, a cult figure and the father of literary drug-culture. He was the intimate friend of Wordsworth, Coleridge and other English Romantic poets. A natural rebel and loner, De Quincey discovered opium as an Oxford student and became a lifelong addict.
De Quincey's 'Confessions of an English Opium Eater' - describing the astonishing dreams, sublime and horrific, to which opium gave rise - became a world-wide sensation, influencing Baudelaire, Poe, Cocteau and Burroughs amongst others. A leading author of his time, De Quincey was dogged by scandal and debt. His revelations about the private lives of the Romantic poets plunged him into controversy, and much of his work was written whilst dodging creditors on the seedy back streets of London and Edinburgh.
This newly-revised ebook edition (2012) of the classic biography describes a strange and adventurous life, full of colourful characters in a fascinating cultural era.
The Opium Eater A Life of Thomas De Quincey eBook Grevel Lindop
My name is David Morrell. I'm a novelist whose upcoming MURDER AS A FINE ART showcases the brilliant 19th century British author, Thomas De Quincey. TDQ's CONFESSIONS OF AN ENGLISH OPIUM-EATER was the first memoir about drug dependency. His "On the Knocking at the Gate in MACBETH" is a staple of Shakespeare analysis and an early mesmerizing example of psychological criticism. His "On Considering Murder as One of the Fine Arts" (from which I took my title) pioneered the true-crime non-fiction genre. His "The English Mail-Coach" is one of the great essays in English literature. Grevel Lindop was the first modern biographer to write a full-length study of De Quincey. It was published in 1981. My copy is well-thumbed and underlined to the point that I feared for its safety. Now Lindop has revised his original text, and I can't wait to learn more about this captivating author whose unique personality shimmers on every page of Lindop's informative, entertaining biography. This is literary scholarship of a high order.Product details

The Opium Eater A Life of Thomas De Quincey eBook Grevel Lindop Reviews
Not what one would consider a "page-turner", this biography is a well constructed biography on the life of the poet Thomas De Quincy. His early life plagued by death and an austere up-bringing, De Quincey led a hard and often times tragic life. Lindop does an excellent job of presenting the compelling life of the poet. Lindop allows Thomas De Quincey's life to tell itself. He presents a factual representation of De Quincey's life, only giving suppositions when supported by research. A well written biography that I would highly recommend.
Like David Morrell, whose review of this book is also on , I bought "The Opium Eater" many years ago and have read it into tatters. De Quincey is an immensely influential author, who cast his spell on Poe and Baudelaire among others, but he's also a hugely entertaining one, with a deep intellect, profound originality, and an awesome, black sense of humor. His "On Murder Considered as One of the Fine Arts" was published in 1827, but its attitude is as modern as anything written now and its theme is (to borrow a term from Hollywood) high concept and irresistible. It was the first thing I read of De Quincey's and I was an instant convert. I have clung to my dead tree edition of this book for several decades and dragged it with me over thousands of kilometres, so I was really pleased to see this new edition, which is both updated and (as an e-book) available in a format that's much easier to take with me when I travel. If you haven't read De Quincey, I recommend you try his work immediately (much of it, if not all, is available in free editions on ), and if you enjoy his writing I absolutely recommend this biography.
